Two Major Industry Based Certification Programs Generate Interest

Over the course of the past few years, many of our colleagues have expressed interest in learning more about two industry based certification programs for mailers, the CMDSM (Certified Mail and Distribution Systems Manager) and the CMM (Certified Mail Manager).

Professional certification is important to mailing professionals as it demonstrates a commitment to a higher level of knowledge and understanding of our speciality. The mailroom is no longer considered a “basement” department – the functionality of all mail center and mail processing employees in many different types of organizations requires a higher level of ability and understanding than ever before. With an ever-changing set of rules and regulations, it is critical that mail professionals everywhere enhance the standing of our profession through processes like certification.

The CMDSM is an accreditation sponsored by the Mail Systems Management Association (MSMA) and offered at Mailcom conferences. It is a four-hour exam comprised of both multiple choice and essay questions. This exam covers a broad range of skills including knowledge of mailing regulations, distribution systems, human resources management, financial management and general managerial skills.

To qualify to take this exam, an individual must:

Currently be employed in the field for five or more years, with at least three years in management or

Have at least three years in management and two years as a member of MSMA (can be concurrent), and provide a letter of recommendation from their employer or a recognized professional in management.

Attain 150 professional expertise points in the following areas:
· Professional Experience
· MSMA Experience
· NON-MSMA Experience (includes PCC involvement)
· Education

The CMM is sponsored by the International Publishing Management Association (IPMA) and is offered at various times throughout the year. This, too, is a comprehensive exam covering the following areas: communication skills, computer skills, financial management, general management, personnel management, mail management/technical skills, and printing management/technical skills. This six-hour exam is structured with both multiple choice and essay questions. The CMM does require recertification every five years through the accumulation of points earned through continuing education, seminar and show attendance, and article publication.

To qualify to take this exam, an individual must:

· Have a minimum of five years of mail management experience and currently be employed in an in-plant environment.

· Pledge to adhere to the CMM Code of Ethics

· Be able to demonstrate character and professionalism through three letters of recommendation.

Both exams also have a two-tiered pricing structure for members and non-members. If you are interested in obtaining further information, please visit the MSMA and IPMA websites at:
